Individual Major Medical Insurance

ACA-Compliant Health Insurance options through our Private Health Insurance Exchange

For those seeking individual major medical health insurance, Open Enrollment takes place each fall. The Affordable Care Act mandates that you have health insurance. If you don’t, you’ll need to report it on your tax return and pay a penalty.*

Enrollment is available only during the annual Open Enrollment Period unless an applicant qualifies for a Special Enrollment Period.

Special Enrollment: Outside the Open Enrollment Period, you can enroll in an ACA-compliant health plan only if you qualify for a Qualifying Life Event or a Complex Situation as defined by the ACA.

  • Qualifying Life Events include: Losing other health care coverage; marriage or divorce; having a baby, adopting a child, or placing a child for adoption or foster care; moving your residence; gaining citizenship;
  • Complex Situations include: A serious medical condition or natural disaster kept you from enrolling during Open Enrollment; misinformation or misrepresentation during enrollment; enrollment error; victims of domestic abuse.

The Alumnae Insurance Program offers a Private Health Insurance Exchange, which is similar to, but separate from, the government health insurance marketplace (or public exchange). Our Exchange allows you to compare and purchase both qualified public exchange plans and other “off-exchange” plans offered by multiple carriers in most states. You can:

  • Purchase public exchange individual major medical plans from a variety of carriers
  • Purchase “off-exchange” individual major medical plans from a variety of carriers
  • Secure federal subsidies, if you qualify
  • Purchase supplementary health insurance, such as vision, dental and more
*For 2015, the penalty is 2% of your income, or $325 per adult and $162.50 per child. In 2016, it will jump to 2.5% of your income.
