Exploring Solo Travel
Solo travel is on the rise. What you need to know.
The solo travel trend started over a decade ago, but it’s become more popular than ever. According to a report released last month, 62% of survey respondents said they plan to take between two and five solo trips within the next year.1

What’s Driving Solo Travel?
In the years since travel reopened after pandemic lockdowns, solo travel has gained in popularity, particularly among young people, with 76% of Millennials and Gen-Z planning solo trips this year.2 This is largely attributable to availability of flexible work arrangements and a rise in digital nomads (people who visit several cities or countries over several months and work remotely).
Some choose solo trips because they are easier to plan and tailor to your liking, without the need to compromise for a group. According a recent American Express survey, 57% of respondents would opt for a quick solo weekend getaway rather than a longer trip, with nearly a third indicating they’d prefer solo travel to a new city.3
Solo travel also provides the opportunity for relaxation, the pursuit of personal interests, and self-discovery. Women account for 60% of solo bookings with more female travelers expected to make solo plans in 2025, a trend attributable to better connectivity, social media influence, and an increase in safe accommodations. Women now make up over half of all bookings with adventure travel companies, according to data from the Adventure Travel Trade Association.4
Where Do Solo Travelers Want to Go?
Leading destinations for solo travel include Spain, Italy, Greece, New Zealand, Australia, and Thailand. Cruise lines have also taken notice offering additional single cabins, dedicated events, and social activities for solo guests.
With the rise in solo travel, expect to see many more options for solo travelers in 2025, including flexible seating options in restaurants and bars, and personal tasting menus.
