Travel Insurance: Your Most Asked Questions Answered
Below are answers to some of the most common questions we receive.
Why do I need Travel Protection?
Travel protection is designed to cover both you and the cost of your travel arrangements from unforeseeable events that may affect your travel plans. Our plans provide coverage for trip cancellations, trip interruptions, medical expenses, emergency evacuations, global medical transports, and more. Our plans also provide 24-hour traveler assistance services to help you with emergency situations that might arise during your trip.
When deciding whether to purchase travel protection, consider not only your own health, but that of your family too. Our plans provide Trip Cancellation and Trip Interruption coverage that can help if you or any of your family members become sick or injured causing you to cancel your trip.

Why are two Trip Protection plans offered?
We offer Trip Protection plans through Travel Insured International and Trip Assure. Both provide coverage for Trip Cancellation, Trip Interruption, Medical Expenses, Emergency Medical Evacuation, Travel Delays, and much more. The best plan for you will depend on your personal situation and your destination. We recommend you compare the available quotes and review plan details to make a selection that meets your individual needs.
How Much Trip Protection coverage do I need?
Many trip costs are fully refundable, but some are not. You should protect the full cost of your non-refundable air, land, and cruise travel arrangements.
What is Trip Interruption?
Trip Interruption reimburses you for unused land or water travel arrangements, plus additional transportation costs to join your trip if you must depart after your scheduled departure date or rejoin your trip when you must interrupt it for a covered reason.
What is Trip Cancellation?
Trip Cancellation reimburses you for unused, non-refundable, pre-paid trip costs if you must cancel your trip for a covered reason. The covered reason that causes you to cancel must occur after your effective date—and prior to both your cancellation and scheduled trip departure.
Should I buy Cancel For Any Reason coverage?
Although Trip Cancellation covers many circumstances, a Cancel for Any Reason benefit allows you to cancel a trip for any reason not otherwise covered by your plan. If you cancel two days or more before your scheduled departure date, this benefit provides reimbursement for up to 75% of the unused non-refundable trip cost insured. Cancel for Any Reason benefits are available to those who purchase within the time-sensitive window, who insure 100% of their non-refundable expenses, and who are not disabled from travel at the time of purchase.
What is a Pre-Existing Condition?
A Pre-Existing Condition means an illness, disease, or other condition during the 60-day period1 immediately prior to the date your coverage is effective for which you or your traveling companion, business partner, or family member: (1) received or received a recommendation for a test, examination, or medical treatment for a condition which first manifested itself, worsened or became acute or had symptoms which would have prompted a reasonable person to seek diagnosis, care or treatment; or (2) took or received a prescription for drugs or medicine, except for a condition which is treated or controlled solely through the taking of prescription drugs or medicine and remains treated or controlled without any adjustment or change in the required prescription throughout the 60 day period before coverage is effective under your plan.
The Pre-Existing Condition Exclusion can be waived if travel insurance is purchased very soon after making your first payment for a trip, thus eliminating the need to worry about your Pre-Existing Conditions.
When is the best time to buy travel protection?
For a variety of reasons, it is important to purchase travel protection when you first book your trip (i.e., make your first payment for travel arrangements). Most travel insurance policies must be purchased within 15 or 21 days of the date of the trip deposit (or welcome letter) to be eligible for the Cancel for Any Reason benefit and the Pre-existing Condition Exclusion Waiver.
When will my plan go into effect?
For Trip Cancellation and Cancel for Any Reason Benefits, coverage begins at 12:01am on the day after you purchase the plan. For most other coverages, coverage begins when you depart on your trip.
May I cancel my plan if, after reviewing it, I am not satisfied?
Read your Plan Document as soon as you receive it. If you’re not satisfied, you have 10 days (or more, depending on your plan and state of residence) to request a refund, provided you haven’t started your trip or initiated a claim. Premiums are non-refundable after this period.
What should I do if I need emergency medical care while traveling?
Our plan assistance providers can help you in emergency situations by helping to find a suitable medical facility and, if needed, assessing the appropriateness of—and arranging for—transportation, evacuation, or repatriation. Your Plan Document provides contact information and instructions, so be sure to carry it with you on your trip.
In an acute emergency, get medical care as soon as possible. Pre-approval is not required, nor are you restricted to any sort of network. Claims are subject to approval and payment is typically limited to reasonable and customary charges for services that are medically-necessary.
Why might I need a separate Travel Medical insurance plan?
The medical coverage available with Trip Protection has limits—often a $200,000 maximum, for example—which is generally sufficient if your primary health insurance covers you overseas. But your health insurance may not cover you when you travel abroad, leaving you responsible for medical expenses you may incur. We offer several Travel Medical plans, some of which are renewable for up to 24 months and can cover multiple trips.
